WiMAX Forum Initiatives

AeroMACS: The global Aviation industry understands that it needs to upgrade its airport surface communications systems. With over 100 slot-limited airports in the US and Western Europe alone and the current system pushed to its limits, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and EUROCONTROL/SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) have identified the Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communications System (AeroMACS) to support this ever growing need for increased data communications and information sharing on the airport surface. AeroMACS will help to achieve the necessary efficiency gains by providing increased transmission of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Airline Operations Communications (AOC) on the airport surface. Smart Cities: Municipalities have complex communications needs and often struggle to cope while relying on dated systems. Cities need to balance the desire for better and more efficient ways to manage their assets, provide services to their citizens, and protect the public; with the need to save on operational costs, reduce network complexity and focus on more environmentally friendly solutions. In order to accomplish these goals, they require a technology that is mature with a solid ecosystem and robust upload capabilities. Read more here.

Rural and Emerging Markets: Time Division Duplexing (TDD) Wireless technologies are the ideal solutions for providing cost-effective broadband connectivity in rural and emerging markets. Today TDD wireless technologies serve hundreds of millions of broadband subscriptions in previously unconnected areas such as Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the rural United States and more.
